Birding in Nimbokrang

Nimbokrang

Nimbokrang is a transmigration settlement only 2 hours drive away from Jayapura in West Sentani. It’s a good base for exploring the bird-rich lowland alluvial forest of the Cyclops Mountains. The forest directly around Nimbokrang has been clearded for agriculture, but huge areas remain intact and the roads and side paths provide access into the forest depths. The combination of open areas and deep forest makes it ideal for birding watching. Furthermore is the location in the most eastern part of West Papua a guarantee to see bird species that are not represented further west, so a perfect way to build up your species list considerably.

Key Bird Species

Common Paradise Kingfisher:  Beautiful long-tailed Kingfisher that is, despite its name, extremely difficult to see. In Nimbokrang we have a hide prepared, where the bird is attracted with worms, so we can have close looks and take good pictures.

Twelve-wired Bird-of-Paradise:  Beautiful member of the Birds-of-Paradise family. Males have their tail replaced by twelve elongated wires they use to caress females during courtship. They use the same lek year by year close to the car stop, so we normally have good looks at it without too many efforts.

Pale-billed Sicklebill: Odd large brown Bird-of-Paradise, with a bare head and a very long curved bill. Nimbokrang is the only place so far where you can see this restricted range bird and our local bird guide knows the best place to see it, altough some luck is needed.

King Bird-of-Paradise: Fairly small but exquisitely beautiful bird with bright red upperparts and two tail-wires ending in a metallic green snail-shaped disk. They are stunning to see in every situation, but the males displaying are an absolutely incredible spectacle of moving colors.
