Lore Lindu
Lore Lindu is propbably the best place to see the unique avifauna of Sulawesi with 80% of the islands endemic species present. This is mainly because the park has different levels of altitude that can be visited. The main rule is altough that the higher the altitude the harder you’ve got to work for it. But the rewards are great, the park is beautiful and inhabits the endemic bird family(!) of Sulawesi: the Hylocitreidae (only one species: Hylocitrea). Add up special beauties like Racquet-tails, Bee-Eaters and Fruit-Doves and you know why Lore Lindu is on the wish list of many hardcore birders.
Key Bird Species
Purple-bearded Bee-eater: Large and beautiful endemic Bee-eater of the highlands. Not easy to see and one of the main reasons people come to Lore Lindu. The dark purple on its head and breast fades beautifully into maroon until the green back and wings. Carefully designed bird!
Hylocitrea: Maybe not the most spectacular bird to see, but so unique that it forms its own family and with that Sulawesi is the only place in the world to see this family. That’s why serious birders from all over the world come to Lore Lindu to see it.
Diabolical Nightjar: Nicely cryptically patterned bird that is a mysterious habitant of the deep highlands forest. Because of its secretive life in the night, it was given supernatural powers by the local people, but it peacefully hunts for insects. We hope to find one roosting during the day.
Geomalia: Rare and secretive Thrush of the forest floor. Easy to recognize with warm rufous-orange underparts and a long tail. Lore Lindu is one of the very few places with a chance of seeing this special endemic.
Malia: Very odd member of the Locustella family (Grasshopper-warblers) that has puzzeled scientists for many years. With its bright yellow underside it looks like something between an Oriole and Bulbul and its an attractive visitor of highland forest canopies.
