West Papua Birding Trip
Birders will find Waigeo a REAL PARADISE, this island is the only home of the even by bird of paradise standards, extra ordinary Wilson’s bird Paradise. You should see other memorable and rare species such as Red bird of paradise, Pheasant Pigeon, Papuan Frogmouth, Rufous bellied Kookabura and many more.

Physical difficulty: Moderate to difficult
Bird Photography: is the best, special the west papua bird endemic
Walking condition: the walking ranges from easy to moderate, but the Wilson’s lek is a tough, 2 hours walk up to a ridge on the flank of the mountain.
Sea Transport & Road: to cross the island we will use express public boat with route sorong – waigeo – sorong. And land transport we will use a car.
Accommodation: Many sites in this remote region, lodgings are simple (e.g. waigeo) with share bathroom, no hot water and very limited internet access. In Sorong we will stay at standard hotel.

Max group size: 10 persons
After arrival at Sorong airport direct transfer by car to the harbour, we will travelling on the two hours express boat ride across to Waigeo island. Arrival at the harbour then by car 30 minutes to our base camp or homestay. Lunch will be served at our base camp or homestay. Afternoon birding around homestay and along the main road for bird species here including Blyth’s hornbill, Eclectus parrot, Sulphur crested Cockatoo, Black capped Lory, Coconut Lorikeet, Palm Cockatoo, Yellow faced Myna, Hooded Butcherbird, Northern Fantail, Yellow billed Kingfisher, Beach Kingfisher, Rufous bellied Kookabura, Spangled drongo, Rusty Pitohui, New Guinea Friarbird, Brown Oriole, Mimic Honeyeater, Tawny breasted Honeyeater, Pinon’s Imperial Pigeon, Purple tailed Imperial Pigeon, Wompoo, Superb Fruit Dove, Great Cuckoo Dove, Brush Cuckoo, Stephan’s Emerald Dove. Dinner and overnight at homestay.
Day 2: Wilson’s Bird of Paradise
Early morning breakfast at 4 am, then we will walk to display Lekof Wilson’s Bird of Paradise, we will see amazing display postures of this nearly mythical bird at close range from the comfort of a well appointed palm hide. Other bird species here including Papuan Pitta, Common Paradise Kingfisher, Hook billed Kingfisher, Pheasant Pigeon, Pale billed Scrubwren, Cinnamon ground Dove, Rusty mouse warbler, we may spot Bruijn’sBrushturkey if we are lucky, Raja AmpatPitohui, Dusky megapodes, Long tailed Buzzard, Gurney eagle, Collared ghoshawk, Grey headed ghoshawk, Variable ghoshawk, Variabe dwarf Kingfisher, Azure Kingfisher, New guinea Bronzewing, dwarf fruit dove, Claret breasted fruit dove, pink spotted fruit dove, red necked crake and Western crowned Pigeon. Lunch, Dinner and overnight at homestay.
Day 3: The Red Bird of Paradise
Other bird species including Yellow Capped Pygmy Parrot, Great billed Parrot, Ruby Throated Myzomela, Moluccan King Parrot, White eared Catbird, Puff backed Honeyeater, Brown bcked Honeyeater, Long billed Honeyeater, Spotted Honeyeater, and Green backed Honey eater, Black sided Robin, Olive Crowned Flowerpecker, Olive Flyrobin, Brown headed Crow, Sooty Thicket Fantail, Glossy mantled Manucode, Frilled Monarch, Spot winged Monarch, Golden Monarch, Yellow breasted Boatbill, Little Shrikethrush, Grey Whistler, Back and Common Cicadabird, Lowland Peltop, Barred Cuckooshrike, Black Butcherbird, Yellow and Pygmy bellied Longbill, Black Berrypecker, Fairy gerygone, Lunch, Dinner and overnight at homestay.
Day 4: WaigeoIsland
We shall have a chance to spend time with Wilson’s Bird of Paradise and Red Bird of Paradise, or we could search some species that we still missed.Lunch, Dinner and overnight at homestay.
Day 5: Waigeo Island – Sorong
Morning birding around the homestay, Lunch at Homestay after lunch transfer to the harbour for boat express back to Sorong.Dinner and overnight at hotel in Sorong.
Day 6: Sorong – Next Destination
Breakfast at the hotel then transfer to the airport for your next destination.
